Christmas Holly and other greenery including Mistletoe and Ivy were originally used in warding off evil spirits during the winter solstice festival. Holly has prickly leaves which for Christians, had it represent the thorns of that Jesus wore when he was crucified. In Pagan times Holly was a male plant and Ivy was a female plant. Whichever one was brought into the house first over winter, told who was going to rule the household that year.
