The word Pumpkin first showed up in the fairy tale Cinderella. Jack-o-lanterns were originally made with turnips and potatoes by the Irish. These were used to ward off evil spirits. Once the tradition hit the North American shore, people found it much easier to use pumpkins. Pumpkins are grown on every continent except Antarctica. Illinois is the unofficial pumpkin capital of the world. According to a study, 95% of the pumpkins grown in the U.S. are harvested from Illinois soil.
