Lions live in the grasslands, scrub, and open woodlands of the sub-Saharan Africa.  The Lion is the second largest cat in the world.  It is closely related to its bigger cousin the tiger.  Lions aren't like other cats, they are social creatures and live in groups called prides.  These prides can be as large as 30 lions.  There are typically three males and up to a dozen females and their young.  When lions roar they are merely keeping track of one another.  Its their form of communication.  The roars from both the females and males can be heard up to 5 miles away.  Male lions spend much of their time guarding their territory and their cubs where the females are the main hunters of the group.  They are smaller and more agile.  Lions usually hunt at night. Their prey includes antelopes, buffaloes, zebras, young elephants, rhinos, hippos, wild hogs, crocodiles and giraffes. But they also sometimes eat smaller prey like mice, birds, hares, lizards, and tortoises. They are not above stealing kills from other carnivores, like hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs, and leopards, or scavenging spoiled meat.
